Who do you think you are?

Your Mindset and How to Make it Work in Your Favor

Who do you think you are to dream about being successful in a business?

What makes you think you have a skill or talent that other people would want to invest in?  Who made you an expert?

Think you have something unique to offer?  Think again…

Maybe no one has ever been rude enough to actually say any of these things to you but…

I bet you’ve imagined them haven’t you?

As Brene Brown, points out in her book The Gifts of Imperfection, we can be our own worst enemy in the ways that we talk to ourselves.

Why do we allow this to happen and what can be done about it?

Here’s the Bad News…

That little (or big) voice that whispers, murmurs and sometimes even shouts at you that you are not good enough, will probably always be there. We all have one and she can get started at some of the most inopportune times: just before a major presentation, in the middle of a sales call or before you even get out of bed in the morning.

Most of us try to ignore her.

Or we try to shout her down with positive affirmations.

Or we just give up and listen while we back down, back out or give up.  None of these options really serve us in the end.

Here’s the Good News…

You can decide how to  handle the voice. You can be in charge.

In his book, Unleash the Power of the Female Brain, Daniel Amen  suggests the following technique:

Begin by writing down the thoughts you are telling yourself.  Then ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Is it true?
  2. If the answer is ‘yes’, ask yourself, can you absolutely know without a doubt that it is true?
  3. How do you react when you believe that thought?
  4. Who would you be without the thought?
  5. How would you feel if you didn’t have that thought?

Now take the original thought and completely turn it around to its opposite and ask yourself:

  1. Could the opposite of the original thought be true?
  2. Could it be even truer than the original thought?
  3. Which thought serves me better?
  4. Which thought is ultimately in my best interest to believe?

Now practice keeping the new and positive thought in the forefront in the upcoming week.  Notice the difference it makes in your decision making and your actions.
