4 Ways to Cope with Change
What is something everyone, no matter your age, gender or socioeconomic group, has experienced?
Change.
We’ve all had it, we don’t like it and somehow it often takes us by SURPRISE. So, how can you cope and come out with a positive result?
Here are some tips for adjusting to change in your personal life, your business and the world:
Revisit your “Why”
Burned out on the job? Feel that you aren’t making a difference? We all want to feel that what we are doing matters. Take some time to remember the impact that you want to make.
Reconnect with the basics
What are the basic values, traits, and characteristics that you hope to embody in your daily work and relationships? What do they look like in action and how are you sharing them with others? Make a plan and a commitment to focus in on those values in all your transactions and interactions.
Remember when…
Stories motivate. Take the time to remember the stories that are part of your history. Consider the change and the impact that you have had so far. What successes have you had? What do you hope to achieve in the future? Have you ever had a difficult period in your life, maybe one you thought you would never get through, believed you didn’t deserve and certainly didn’t expect? Did you look back on it later and feel that the situation helped shape who you are today, or changed your perspective in some important way? Could this be one of those times?
Recognize what you can control
Put the serenity prayer into practice: God, give me the serenity to accept things which cannot be changed; Give me the courage to change things which must be changed; And the wisdom to distinguish one from the other. There may be things in your environment or your circumstances that you can’t change but the one thing you always have the ability to change is yourself and your reactions. The best thing you can do is recognize the unchangeable, positive strengths, gifts and talents you possess. So that even in the midst of change, you can feel solid and unchangeable in your abilities. This can not only give you focus, but also help you to turn change into opportunity. You’re in charge of yourself. There is tremendous power in this.
