3 Ways to Set a Goal that Works

Do you have some big goals?

Are you making progress?

Or are you making excuses?

How long have you been saying you were going to write that book?  Start your own business?  Try a new career path? Get out of debt?  Get in shape?

Maybe you think you tried and it didn’t pan out.  You wrote a few chapters and quit.  Sent the finished copy off to a publisher and got rejected.  Applied for another job and didn’t get the call back.  Created a business plan but couldn’t find the cash to get started. Tried a diet and gave it up.

Maybe you figure goals and dreams like that are for other people.  People who are lucky.  People who are really  talented or smart.  People who have willpower.  People who have connections.

Truth or Fiction?

What if I told you none of those things are necessary for you to be successful in accomplishing your dream?  What if I told you that you are sabotaging your own success with your beliefs?

Our beliefs are so wired into our brains that many times we aren’t even aware of how they guide our steps.

So what keeps us from setting goals?  Here are just a few things:

Goals make us vulnerable.  It means taking a stand and letting others know what we are about.

A goal sets the stage for success or failure. It draws a line in the sand and has an end result.

Setting a goal means being decisive.  It means taking action even when you aren’t positive that it is the right action.

Here are a some tips for setting a goal and achieving success.

  1. Set a goal and write it down every day in the present tense: I am making 10 new contacts every week. I am writing 1,000 words a day. I am attending 3 networking events every week.  I am selling $___________ a month.
  2. Make a list of everything that you can think of that you need to do to accomplish your goals.  Prioritize the list and work on accomplishing something everyday that will lead you closer to your goal.
  3. Write a letter to yourself and congratulate yourself on accomplishing your goal.  Start the letter with: Remember when you set the goal to_______________? Remember how big and daunting it seemed? Then list all the things that you had to do to accomplish the goal. Write about how it feels to accomplish the goal and how your life has changed. Seal the letter and put a date on it to read it at the end of the time frame that you have set to accomplish your goal.
